FISHING METHOD:  Floating line with 10 -18 Ft leader and strike indicator.  Use a slow retrieve (6 - 8 seconds for each hand twist) with a couple 2 - 3 inch pulls every 25 - 30 seconds. Try this pattern in the spring or fall before or after turnover.

 Hook  Teck Twin - SCF 200 size 8 - 16
 Bead  Black – 3/32 or 1/8 inch
 Thread  8/0 Red
 Gills  Sparkle Yarn - White
Underbody  Holograph tinsel – medium red
 Ribbing  Red wire - fine
 Body  Red acetate floss
Thorax  Diamond Dub - Peacock black

TYING NOTES:

  1. First pinch your barb down.

  2. Tie in a small piece of sparkle yarn for the gills. Whip-finish the fly.

  3. Slide the bead on your hook with the bigger hole facing forward.

  4. Start your tying thread behind the bead, and lay down a thread base.

  5. Tie in your ribbing the length of the hook shank.

  6.  Split the acetate floss in half, and tie in the floss the length of the body, leaving your tying thread at the head of the fly.

  7. Tie in a piece of holograph tinsel at the head of the fly.

  8. Wrap the tinsel down and up the body, tying it off at the back of the bead.

  9. Counter wrap the rib forward (7 - 9 wraps) and tie off.

  10. Neatly wrap the floss forward and tie off.

  11. Whip finish the fly, but do not cut your tying thread.

  12. While holding the thread, dip the fly in Acetone for a few seconds to melt the Acetate floss.

  13. Dub a small amount of Peacock Black diamond dub for the thorax.

  14. Add a small amount of glue to your tying thread and whip-finish the fly.

I received this pattern from Calvin Kuperus, good friend of mine. The body color can be tied in red, olive-green, tan, or light brown. Try different holograph tinsel colors to change the body tint.
