FISHING METHOD: Floating line with 10 -16 Ft leader. Use a slow to medium retrieve (4 - 8 inch steady strips) with a occasional pause added in. Try using this fly on the shoals during the evening.

 Hook  Mustad 94840 size 10 - 14
 Thread  6/0 or 8/0 black
 Tail  Grizzly hackle tip
 Body  Grizzly hackle - Palmered
 Wing  Mallard flank feather (3 feathers)
 Hackle  Grizzly hackle feather (2 times the gap for length)
 Head  Black thread

TYING NOTES:

  1. First pinch your barb, then lay a thread base down. 

  2. Tie in a Grizzly hackle tip (the length should be1 1/2 times the hook gap).

  3. Palmer the remaining hackle feather up the hook for the body.

  4. Wrap the thread up the body to help support the hackle (5 - 7  ribs).

  5. Secure and trim the remaining hackle above the 3/4 point of the hook shank.

  6. Stack and tie in three Mallard flank feathers with the curve of the feather facing upwards. (Use two or three loose wraps to tie in the wing.)

  7.  Adjust the length of the wing by pulling on the feathers. The wing should be slightly shorter than the tail.

  8. Secure and trim the extra wing material.

  9. Tie in and wrap the hackle 3 - 4  times around the hook in front of the wing.

  10. Tie off and trim the hackle.

  11. Build a small thread head and whip finish the fly.
