I was able to get this pattern off Brent Schlenker at the Vancouver Fly Fishing Show.
FISHING METHOD: I have fished this pattern on both floating and sinking lines. In shallow water, use a slow pull retrieve with several short 2 to 4 inch pulls every 15-20 seconds. In the evening, you may want to speed up your retrieve. On sinking lines, let the fly sink near the bottom before you start your retrieve. I use a 3 to 4 second full hand twist with several 2 to 6 inch pulls to retrieve the fly.
Hook Size 10-2x or 12-3x streamer hook Thread 6/0 black Bead Red glass bead Weight 0.020 Lead wire Tail Wine Burgundy Marabou Tail Highlights 2 - 4 Strands of Red Flourofibre on each side Rib Medium Red Copper Wire Body 2/3 Black and 1/3 Red Mohair or Dazzle Link Dubbing TYING NOTES:
Pinch your barb down and slide the glass bead on the hook.
Tie in and lay a thread base down on the shank of the hook.
Tie in a sparse amount of marabou for the tail.
Tie in 2 - 4 strands of red Flourofibre for tail highlights.
Tie in your ribbing material.
Wrap in the lead on the front 2/3 of the hook shank.
Form a dubbing loop and add the body material in the loop in sparse quantities.
Twist the loop in to a dubbing noodle.
Pull the fibres in one direction before you wind the noodle up the hook shank.
Counter wind the ribbing up the body and tie off the ribbing.
Whip finish and brush the fibres back.
Soak the fly in hot water to take the memory out of the body and tail material.
This pattern is very suggestive with lots of movement. This is a great searching pattern that will bring you some of your bigger fish for the year.
CAUTION: Be sure to hang on to your rod while fishing this pattern. Good Luck!
