FISHING METHOD :Floating line with 10 -16 Ft leader. Use the count down method to get the fly just off the bottom. Use a slow to medium retrieve (4 - 8 inch steady strips) with a several quick 2 - 3 inch pulls every 30 - 40 seconds. Use the same retrieve for sinking lines. Try using this fly on the shoals during the evening.

  Hook

Mustad 9672 3x size 8 – 12

Thread

6/0 or 8/0 black

Weight

Lead or substitute (optional)

Body

Dark olive sparkle chenille

Wing

Partridge (cement with cement)

Wing cement

Dave flex cement

Thorax

Light olive dubbing

Wing case

Pheasant tail

Legs

Natural deer hair (5 - 6 pieces)

TYING NOTES:

  1. First pinch your barb, then lay a thread base down.

  2. Add the weight to body, secure it with tying thread.

  3. Tie in the chenille for the body. Wrap the chenille up the shank of the hook, stopping 2/3 of the way up.

  4. Cement two pieces of partridge (1/8 - 1/4 inch in width and 2/3 the shank of the hook).

  5. Tie in the wings to the side of the abdomen, and pull downward.

  6. Tie in the wing case, and dub the thorax.

  7. I tie in the legs at this time. Pull the wing case forward, remember to leave enough room for a small thread head.

  8. Whip finish and cement the head of the fly.

I tied in the legs first, then tied off the wing case. This secures the legs a little better than reversing these two steps.
