Fly Tied and Photo taken by Ruben Breitkreutz

I have been waiting to get this pattern for a couple of years. I had the chance to see the designer (Philip Rowley) tie this pattern, plus several others. It was a well spent two hours. The added bonus was to have him  autograph his new book, (Fly patterns for still waters ).

FISHING METHOD :Floating line with 10 -18 Ft leader. Use a strike indicator to help keep your fly at the feeding depth. Use a slow retrieve (6 - 8 seconds for each hand twist) with a couple 2 - 3 inch pulls every 25 - 30 seconds.

Hook  Curved shrimp hook size 8 - 14
Bead  Black metal bead - ex small (3/32)
Ribbing  Red holographic Mylar tinsel (5 - 7 wraps)
 Body  Silver flashabou
 Thorax   Peacock herl (1 - 2 strands)
Gills  White sparkle yarn or Anton yarn
 Thread  8/0 black
Body cement  Clear nail polish or brushable crazy glue

TYING NOTES:

  1. First  pinch your barb down, and slide bead on the hook (small opening facing the eye).

  2. Tie in the gills, leaving ½ inch beyond the head.

  3. Tie off the thread, but don’t build a lot of  bulk or you will have problems with the bead.

  4. Cut the thread, and pull up the bead to cover the tying thread.

  5. Tie in the thread behind the bead and secure the ribbing down the shank of the hook. Return the thread to the bead.

  6. This is the point you will be tying in two folded strands of silver flashabou. Moisten the flashabou, and wrap down and back up the shank.

  7. Tie off the body.

  8. Counter wrap the ribbing up to the bead, and secure it behind the bead.

  9. Tie in the peacock herl behind the bead, and build the thorax (2 - 3 wraps).

  10. Tie off the herl, whip finish the fly.
