CRYSTAL BOATMAN

This is another pattern that I received from Brian Chan at the 2001 Outdoor Show.

FISHING METHOD:  I have fished this pattern on both floating and sinking lines. In early spring, I use a floating line, long leader and fish this pattern tight to the bank. Use a medium to fast retrieve with 3 to 4 inch strips. Use a type 2 or 4 sinking line that sinks with a belly. The leader length should be about 9 to12 feet. In deeper waters, very the depth you start your retrieve. Use the same retrieve as above. The takes can be very aggressive, especially at the surface or near the bottom. In the fall or deeper water use a sinking line.

 Hook

Scud or Curved Pupa hook, size 12-14

 Thread

6/0 or 8/0 black or brown

 Shellback

 Pheasant tail or brown turkey

 Body

 Peacock crystal chenille - medium

 Legs

Super Floss – brown or dark olive

TYING NOTES:

1.    Pinch your barb down and lay down a thread base on the shank of the hook.

2.    Tie in the peasant tail fibres at the eye of the hook. Tie the pheasant fibres back to the bend.

3.    Tie in the legs, 2/3 up the hook shank using figure-eight thread wraps.

4.    Tie in the crystal chenille and wind the chenille up the body. Tie off the chenille and trim the excess.

5.    Pull the shellback over the body and tie off.

6.    Form a neat head, whip-finish and apply head cement.

7.    Trim the legs, leaving them 5/8 inches (16mm) long on each side.

CAUTION: Be sure to hang on to your rod while fishing this pattern. Good Luck!
