I found this Backswimmer fly pattern in a fly shop in Alberta.

FISHING METHOD:  I have fished this pattern on both floating and sinking lines. In early spring, I use a floating line, long leader and fish this pattern tight to the bank. Use a medium to fast retrieve with 3 to 4 inch strips. Use a type 2 or 4 sinking line that sinks with a belly. The leader length should be about 9 to12 feet. In deeper waters, very the depth you start your retrieve. Use the same retrieve as above. The takes can be very aggressive, especially at the surface or near the bottom. In the fall or deeper water use a sinking line.

TYING NOTES:

  1. Pinch your barb down and slide the gold bead on the hook with the smaller hole facing the eye of the hook.

  2. Slide the second bead on the hook shank. Push both beads to the eye of the hook.

  3. Tie in the Mylar before the bend of the hook. Whip-finish and trim off the thread.

  4. Pull the glass bead over the Mylar. Lay down a thread base between the two beads.

  5. Dub the body using a dubbing loop.

  6. Tie in the Biots on each side of the fly behind the gold bead.

  7. Pull the Mylar over the top of the body. Tie and trim off the Mylar behind the gold bead.

  8. Dub the thorax.

  9. Add glue to the tying thread and whip-finish the fly.

  Good Luck!
