MINNOW PATTERN

FISHING METHOD: Floating line with 10 -16 Ft leader. Use the count down method to get the fly just off the bottom. Use a slow to fast retrieve (4 - 8 inch steady strips) with several quick 2 - 3 inch pulls every 30 - 40 seconds. Use the same retrieve for sinking lines.

 Hook  Teck Twin SF 600 size 4 - 8
 Thread  6/0 red / black
 Weight   Lead or substitute
 Tail  Flared silver Mylar tubing 

 Body

 Silver Mylar tubing - small
 Under-body  Polar bear
 Wing  Mallard - 2 feathers  
 Gills  Orange wool
 Head  Black thread
 Eyes  Black on silver size 1.5 mm
 Misc.  Varnish or Epoxy

TYING NOTES: 

  1. First pinch your barb, then lay a thread base down. 
  2. Add the weight to the hook shank, secure the weight. tie off the thread at this time. 
  3. Take a piece of body material, flare one end . The flared end will become the tail for your minnow. 
  4. Slide the tubing on the hook shank with the flared end pointing back. Secure the Mylar tubing with tying thread at the back of the hook shank, leaving the flared end sticking past the bend. 
  5. Tie off and cement this point. 
  6. Tie in your thread at the eye, secure the Mylar at the front.
  7. Tie in the polar bear, having the tips of the hair extending past the tail by a ½ inch.
  8. Tie in the two mallard feathers over the polar bear. The wing should cover the body and the tail.
  9. Tie in the gills, one on each side of the hook.
  10. Build the head to size (1/4 inch in length), whip finish the head.
  11. Stick the eyes on the head at this time.
  12. Varnish or epoxy the head. Let the head dry before you use this pattern.
