The Pheasant Tail

SUBMITTED BY: Ken Burgess

FISHING METHOD:  This fly works very well in the early part of the year.  Use a sinking line to get it down to the desired depth then, retrieve very slowly with long pauses.  I use a long slow swing of my stripping arm where I will strip 18 to 24 inches in 2 to 3 seconds then take the same time to start the next strip.

TYING NOTES:

1. Pinch your barb down on the hook.

2. Lay down a thread base to the two thirds of the shank of the hook.

3. Return the thread to the 1/3 point of the hook and tie in the rib

4. Wrap over the rib material to the hook bend

5. Select 4 to 6 red tipped Pheasant tail fibres.

6. Tie in the tail 3/4 to 1 shank length with 4 or 5 wraps only at the hook bend.  Do not clip the butts.  Hold the butts of the tail material out of the way and wrap the thread to the 1/3 point

7. Wrap the butt end of the tail material to the 1/3 point, and tie off.  Clip the excess

8. Counter wind the copper rib to the 1/3 point, tie off, and clip.

9.. Tie in 12 to16 pheasant tail fibres, tip to the back and long enough to fold forward for a wing case, then have enough left to form legs.  Usually about half way between the hook bend and the end of the tail.

10. Tie in 2 peacock hearl fibres, and wind over the thorax area.  This can be wound forward and  back to build up the thorax

11. Fold the wing case material over the thorax and tie off.  Do not clip the tips

12. Split the pheasant tail fiber tips and fold back and down on each side.  Wrap over the fold point.  .

13. Wrap a small head, whip finish, clip the thread, and cement
