FISHING METHOD :Floating line with 10 -18 Ft leader. Use a strike indicator to help keep your fly at the feeding depth. Use a slow retrieve (6 - 8 seconds for each hand twist) with a couple 2 - 3 inch pulls every 25 - 30 seconds. Cast out your sinking line. Wait till the line is straight before you use the above retrieve.
| Hook | Curved shrimp hook size 10 - 16 |
| Thread | 8/0 Dark brown |
|
Ribbing |
Red copper wire - fine |
| Body | Frostbite - Maroon |
| Wingcase | Pheasant tail fibres |
| Gills | Ostrich herl |
| Thorax | Peacock herl (1 - 2 strands) |
TYING NOTES:
First pinch your barb down, tie in the thread base.
Tie in the ribbing material the length of the hook.
Tie in the body material at the thorax. Wrap back to the bend, then forward to the thorax, tie off.
Counter wrap the rib 3 - 4 turns around the butt, then forward (5 - 7 wraps) and tie off .
Tie in the pheasant tail fibres pointing forward.
Tie in the gills behind the eye and wrap 2-3 times, tie off.
Tie in the herl and build the thorax (4 -5 wraps). Tie off the herl, pull the wing case back over the peacock herl. Tie off the wingcase and cut off the extra pheasant tail fibres.
Whip finish the fly.
I have tied the thorax in reverse, this technique doesn’t crowd the head. I add head cement to the thread before whip finishing. This keeps the cement away from the herl, and strengthens the knot.
