SPRING CREEK BUGGER

Fly Tied and Photo taken by Ruben Breitkreutz

I picked up this pattern in Alberta in the summer of 99. I tried it as soon I got home with great success. The fly swims upside down, making it almost weed less.

FISHING METHOD :Floating line with 10 -16 Ft leader. Use the count down method to get the fly just off the bottom. Use a slow to medium retrieve (2 - 4 seconds for every full hand-twist) mixed with several quick 2 - 3 inch pulls every 10 - 15 seconds. Use a 6 - 9 ft leader with the same retrieve for sinking lines.

Hook  Curved shrimp hook size 10
 Thread  6/0 or 8/0 black
 Hourglass eyes  Gold - 3/32 (Dazl-eyes)
Tail  Marabou (black) with 4 strands of green crystal flash
Body  Marabou (black) with 4 strands of green crystal flash on top
 Hackle  Soft black hackle

TYING NOTES:

  1. First pinch your barb, then lay a thread base behind the eye of the hook.

  2. Tie in the hourglass eyes in a figure eight pattern. Move the tying thread to the bend of the hook.

  3. For the tail, use 15 - 20 strands of marabou. The length should be 1 ½ times the shank of the hook. Tie the tail at the bend of the hook.

  4. Take two strands of crystal flash and fold them in half. Tie in the crystal flash the same as the tail.

  5. Twist the marabou on the tying thread and wrap forward to the eyes.

  6. Pull the crystal forward and tie off.

  7. Tie in the hackle behind the eyes. Wrap the hackle 2 - 3  times, tie off.

  8. Take some marabou fibres and twist them on the tying thread. Wrap over the eyes to build a small head.

  9. Add a small amount of glue to the tying thread, and whip finish the fly.

I have tied this pattern with olive marabou and pearl crystal flash. Both patterns take fish well.
